The Ultimate Commission Experience
Join me and witness the creation of your knife. An experience that you will fondly remember each time you reach for your favourite knife. You will have a heightened appreciation for what it takes to make a knife which is as beautiful as it is utilitarian.
A consultation will be requested prior to booking this course to make sure that I am the right person to make your knife. I would appreciate you viewing my gallery to make sure that you like my style and the type of knives I make.
You will see the sparks and smell the smells, but I will be crafting your piece.
I will explain every process and answer questions throughout the experience.
At the end of the two days you will have a completely unique knife that you have witnessed being made from scratch by me with consideration given to every detail.
You will have significant design influence, material choice and my hands to realise your vision.

The Process
Design - we will take your vision and between us we will come up with a design that meets your requirements.
Profile cutting - your blade will be cut from high quality high carbon tool steel and prepare it for heat treat.
Heat treat (quench and temper) your blade will be heated to a specific temperature and quenched in oil hardening the blade. The hardess is dropped slightly during a process called tempering.
Handle shaping - your choice of materials will be prepared, shaped and put together to form a beautiful handle for your knife. Comfort and shape can be checked during the process (a fantastic benefit of having you there!).
Blade grinding - I will grind your blades bevels, turning a flat piece of steel into a tapered kitchen knife with superb cutting geometry.
Hand sanding - I work through the grits to ensure a beautiful hand finished blade. This takes time, working subtly on the edge geometry as I go.
Handle finishing - the handle must also be meticulously sanded, buffed and oiled to ensure the most is made of the materials.
Final assembly - the blade and knife become one.
Sharpening - your blade will be honed to a razor sharp edge.
THIS IS NOT A FORGING COURSE
The knife is produced via what is known as stock removal. This means I start with a sheet of high quality high carbon tool steel and the knife shape is cut from it.
Please ensure you familiarise yourself with high carbon steel care prior to booking.
The aim of the course will be to create a culinary knife. Size and design can be discussed.
Your knife will be a hidden tang type knife.
Aftercare Kit
Due to being asked frequently by previous students I now offer an Aftercare Kit. This consists of "Teddy's wood wax", a food safe wax which will keep your wooden knife handle in tip top condition and a ceramic steel which will keep your knife honed between sharpening. This is available upon request when you attend for the additional cost of £10 for the wax and £25 for the ceramic steel.
Disclaimer
The aim of the two days is to have fun, make a knife and keep safe.
PPE will be provided and you will be expected to wear it during the day.
Although I will be completing the various processes, you will still be in an environment with sparks, airborne dust and moving machinery, as such masks will be worn when needed as well as gloves and goggles.
You are attending a work shop - risk can never be completely mitigated and by booking/attending you are accepting this.
Terms and Conditions
By booking a knife making course are confirming that you are 18 years of age or over. All students must be over 18. ID will be verified prior to being allowed to take part in the process.

If for any reason you are unable to make the booked date I will require a least 24 hours notice before the start of your day. I will then work with you to re-organise your day.
No shows and late notice cancellations (under 24 hours) will not be refunded or re-booked.
In the unfortunate event that I am unable to conduct the experience I will provide you with as much notice as possible and ensure that your day is re-booked.
If on the day you are experiencing any symptoms of Covid 19 please carry out a lateral flow test prior to attending.
